Biking for Books was founded in 2013 by two high school students who are avid bikers - Faraz Ahmad and Safi Ahmad of John Burroughs School. They joined forces with Barry Bryant, an alum of Adams Elementary School, to organize the Biking for Books cycling event. Together they recognized the need in St. Louis City Schools and the potential of being able to make a small but important contribution by using the activity of collective bicycling.
Biking for Books helps provide students in the St. Louis City schools access to books. Biking for Books uses the activity of biking to bring people together and use the power of awareness to raise funds for this important cause.
The first event of Biking for Books was organized in Spring of 2013. This comprised of a bicycling event of 10, 25 and 50 miles ride - the funds collected from registration and donations were used to purchase books for schools in Saint Louis City District.
The first event in 2013 raised $ 7000.00. The second and third Biking for Books events were held in 2014 and 2015 and raised $ 15000.00 and $ 20000.00 respectively. Biking for Books has thus raised a total of $ 42000.00. These funds have been used for books for 5 sponsored schools of St. Louis City School District.
